Athletics & ECAs

New research shows that participation in sports can increase academic achievement in children and adolescents*. It is with this, and a caring and inclusive community in mind, that KIS practices inclusivity on our sports team.

This means that if you are interested in participating in our team sports at KIS, you are welcome to join. KIS has worked to build programs that safely allow as many children as possible to compete whether they are experienced or at a beginner level. We continually strive to create enough teams to allow all athletes committed to practices to have the opportunity to play. We utilize our facilities to ensure that all teams get the chance to participate in games and, when possible, tournaments at levels that match their abilities.

From U9 (Grade 2 - 3) to Varsity teams, students have the opportunity to develop their growing talents through a variety of sports that foster commitment, structure, and independence. Players focus on self-improvement, developing social skills, cooperation, teamwork, and leadership.

Student-athletes are given the opportunity to participate in our sports programs that include swimming, football (soccer), volleyball, basketball, and badminton.

Throughout the year, our students compete against other international schools in Bangkok. Starting in U13 our teams can travel internationally as part of the through participation in the Mekong River International School Association (MRISA) to participating schools in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and around Thailand.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, for example, our student-athletes will travel to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Phnom Penh to compete against schools like UNIS, SSIS, ISPP, and more.

Our coaching team understands and strives to instill to all members of our community that learning is more important than winning. They see themselves as teachers of students more than the coach of a sport.

The ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and a demonstration of respect for the efforts of team members, opponents, coaches, and officials are promoted as program goals.

Extracurricular Activities

KIS also offers a wide range of after-school activities for every grade level, starting with our three year olds in Early Years 1, providing all students with opportunities to try a variety of activities, helping develop their passion and have fun!

Primary School

The Primary School Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) offer daily activities after school for all grade levels, from the Early Years to G5. A range of activities including arts, crafts, dance, instrumental music, IT, science exploration, sports, cooking, and games are provided to expand upon and develop new student interests.

Secondary School

The Secondary School Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) is complemented by a variety of after-school Sports Coaching Clubs (in addition to the competitive sports teams) which provide training and skill tactics for interscholastic competitions with AISAA members schools. Sports include basketball, soccer, swimming, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, fitness, touch rugby, and athletics. Other clubs vary per term and offer KIS students the opportunity to investigate areas of potential interest, improve skill sets, and interact with like-minded individuals outside of their immediate peer group. Typically, these opportunities include activities such as Model United Nations, band practice, drama club, media club, the student council, So You Think You Can Dance, orchestra, Ted ED club, yearbook, baking club, and design “maker space”.
