![]() English Enhancement ProgrammePrimary School
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme has been developed to help non-native English speakers attain a high level of English proficiency to satisfy the academic requirements and participate to the fullest extent possible in school life. Primary students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 receive EAL support during the regular school day, either in the classroom or by being pulled out for individual or small group support or a combination of both. The Early Years Language acquisition through language immersion, organized and spontaneous activities help Early Years students develop comprehension skills and then establish a working vocabulary in English. Since language skills are key to inquiry-based learning, KIS has developed extensive strategies, curriculums and policies to ensure that language is a focus in all learning areas of the Early Years programme. Non native English speaking students who enter KIS at Kindergarten and up are provided with English enhancement programmes specifically designed for their required level of support. Below are the programmes offered. Secondary School Students must have a certain level of competency in English in order to cope with the KIS Middle Years programme and be fully prepared for the IB Diploma. Students who enter KIS from Grade 6 and up who require English support, will enter the Sheltered English Language Programme (SEAL), a fast track programme designed according to their English language proficiency. They will study English, Humanities, Science and Study Skills with an English language specialist until they are able to cope fully in the mainstream. Other subject areas such as Maths, Thai Studies, Information Technology, Physical Education, the Arts, and Advisory will take place within the mainstream classroom. Students must complete the SEAL programme by the end of the 9th grade in order to be prepared for the demands of the Diploma Programme. Please note...... Students whose mother tongue is not English might require additional support at various times throughout their learning journey. If, at any time, a deficiency in English prevents a student from being successful, additional English language support may be compulsory.
